Do not forget that Karate-Dō begins and ends with rei. – Mr. Gichin Funakoshi, 1st guiding principle
Shotokan Karate is a martial art specializing in systems of blocking, striking, kicking, and making body movements without weapons. Combined with balance, timing, and coordination, single techniques are threaded together to create sequences of movement that imagine engaging with hypothetical opponents. These forms (kata) are karate’s longest surviving lessons passed down from generation to generation. Within kata are extracted glimpses of how to engage a physical opponent with sparring drills, or kumite. Though they are foundational for developing a “fighting spirit”, kumite at first are lessons in cooperation, manners, etiquette, and proper mentality.
NO PREVIOUS MARTIAL ARTS EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.
Current Hampshire Dojo members are encouraged to assist with newcomers and modeling for juniors.
THIS IS NOT AN EXERCISE OR SELF-DEFENSE CLASS. Karate is a study of budo (The Way of the Warrior) that requires a mentality to work, not just “work out”.
Uniforms for beginners are not required. Please come prepared with a perceptive and functional sense of maneuverable clothing that allows for full freedom of motion.
Uniforms (gi) are available for purchase upon request. Supplies and certain sizes are limited.
Class meets in the South Lounge on the 2nd floor of the Robert Crown Center.
(5-College students will be graded pass/fail.)
Class begins and ends with a brief meditation. Followed by warm up and review of fundamental movements, we will study and polish our curriculum of kihon, kata, and kumite. Specialized practices studying theories and capturing the meaning of certain movements will be examined to broaden our overall repertoire of skills and responses.
Ranked members of SKA will practice content specific to bringing out their best for their level. This includes strengthening kihon, practice of favorite kata and anticipating assignments of required kata for white and brown belts, practice of designated required kata for black belts, and developing experience and confidence in kumite.
